Interfaith Group Advises Madrid Police on Diversity

Orthodox priest and police

A team of representatives of Madrid religious denominations in collaboration with the Diversity Management Unit of the Madrid Municipal Police seeks to take the guesswork and potential difficulty out of police interaction with religious communities. They have compiled a Manual of Police Management of Religious Diversity, intended to help police officers avoid conflict when responding to complaints related to the free exercise of religion, expression and assembly.

The manual includes various regulations that can be enforced by public authorities and advice on how police officers should conduct themselves to keep the peace while also respecting the rights of religious denominations.

It was researched and produced by representatives of many different faiths including the Spanish Episcopal Conference, the Archbishopric of Madrid, the Federation of Evangelical Religious Entities of Spain, the Jewish Communities Federation of Spain, the Spanish Islamic Commission, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Federation of Buddhist Communities of Spain, the Orthodox faith, Baha’i Community, Hindus, the Church Scientology and the Sikhs in collaboration with Madrid City Council and the Pluralism and Coexistence Foundation under the Ministry of Justice.
